Opening a retail outlet for wine and beer in one of Sri Lanka’s famous spots was quite an adventure, filled with excitement and challenges. From the very beginning, I was deeply involved, picking the location, finalizing the lease, and helping with the design. I also oversaw all the construction and related tasks.
This project took place during a particularly tough time, as Sri Lanka was grappling with a severe economic crisis. The unstable macro environment meant that supply chains were disrupted, prices fluctuated wildly, and obtaining necessary permits and materials was more complicated than usual. Despite these additional hurdles, including delays and design changes from the landlord, I managed to get the store up and running in six months.
In this article, I want to share the valuable lessons I learned during this challenging but rewarding journey of building a global wine and beer brand amidst the economic turmoil. As Albert Einstein once said, “In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.”
Dig Your Wells Before the Rain
The initial steps in this project were all about careful planning and coordination. First up was selecting the right venue. We needed a location that was not only popular but also easily accessible to our target customers. After checking out various options, we chose a prime spot that promised good foot traffic and visibility. Next came finalizing the lease agreement. This involved some careful negotiation to ensure we got terms and conditions that would support the long-term success of the outlet. We worked closely with legal advisors to make sure the lease agreement was solid and minimized potential risks.
Then, we moved on to the design phase. Designing a retail outlet for wine and beer required a keen eye for detail and an understanding of consumer behavior. The layout needed to create a pleasant shopping experience while adhering to local regulations. By collaborating with a team of experienced designers, we came up with a layout that was both attractive and functional. These initial steps laid a solid foundation for the next phases of the project and highlighted the importance of thorough planning in building a successful global wine and beer brand, even in the middle of an economic crisis.
Killing Goliath
A significant part of this journey was navigating and overcoming various obstacles. One major challenge was dealing with delays from the lessor regarding agreed services. These delays messed up our initial timeline and required constant follow-ups and negotiations. It was essential to maintain clear communication with the lessor while keeping other stakeholders informed about any changes.
Another obstacle was the sudden changes in approved designs imposed by the lessor. These changes forced us to revisit and revise the layout plans, often at short notice. Each alteration had a ripple effect on the construction schedule and the overall project timeline. It became clear that flexibility and adaptability were crucial in managing such unforeseen changes. By adopting a proactive approach and having contingency plans in place, we were able to mitigate the impact of these disruptions.
Despite these challenges, the team’s resilience and collaborative efforts were instrumental in keeping the project on track. Staying focused on the end goal while navigating through obstacles highlighted the importance of persistence and effective problem-solving strategies in project management.
Complete is Better Than Perfect
With the initial planning and design phases behind us, the next step was executing the project. This phase involved managing the construction work and ensuring that everything was done efficiently and on time. One of the critical aspects was coordinating with various stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies. Each of these stakeholders played a crucial role in the successful completion of the project, so it was essential to keep open lines of communication and foster a collaborative working environment.
We conducted regular site visits and progress meetings to monitor the construction work and promptly address any issues that arose. This hands-on approach helped identify potential problems early and implement solutions before they could escalate. By staying highly involved in the day-to-day activities, I ensured the project stayed on track and aligned with the original vision.
Another important aspect was managing the budget and ensuring we stayed within the allocated resources. This required careful planning, constant monitoring, and making necessary adjustments to prevent cost overruns. By keeping a close eye on expenditures and optimizing resource allocation, we completed the project without compromising on quality.

The importance of communication cannot be overstated. Flexibility and adaptability were crucial lessons learned. Projects rarely go exactly as planned, and being open to changes and ready to adjust strategies as needed is vital. This project underscored the need to have contingency plans and to be able to pivot quickly when faced with unexpected challenges. By staying adaptable, we were able to navigate through the obstacles and keep the project moving forward.
